Remind 101
What is it?
Remind 101 is a fantastic resource to communicate with students and parents outside of the classroom without having to share personal information. The teacher is able to text or send email alerts to students and parents about upcoming events. I use this all the time to remind students of tests, homework and what they may need in the upcoming class.
How to use this site
Signing up:
Go to https://www.remind101.com/ to sign up. The home page will look like the picture to the left. All you need to do is click Get Started, and it will quickly and easily take you through the steps to sign up. All you need is an email to join this website. The email you enter will be your username to sign into the site later on.
Creating your classes:
The first thing you need to do when you sign up is create your courses. You can add up to 10 classes! Now, students can sign up to their class. Each class has a number; for example, looking at the picture below, students would need to text the number: 1-709-757-0105 and in the message box put: @fc0b. Then, the students would get a message back asking them to send in their name. Make sure you tell students to put in their correct name and not a nickname; this will help you know who is signed up to your class. There is also a PDF that you can download to give to students and parents that outline the instructions.
Sending Messages:
First, pick a class that you would like to send a message to. Then, type in a message with 140 letters and click send! This is a very easy and user friendly website.

Examples from my classroom
I have used this in my class to remind students about upcoming events. For instance, I sent the message to the left to my students on the Sunday night before a field trip to remind them what they need to bring.
I have sent messages to students to remind them about tests and homework assignments that were due. The night before a test I often encourage students and send them my email if they have any questions.
During Parent teacher interviews, I have invited parents to join Remind 101 to see what I am sending their son or daughter and to also be connected to the class events. Next time, I would like to send the invite to the parents on the very first day of school.

Possible disadvantages and how to overcome them
Once again, what if students don't have a cell phone?
Students can get reminders via their email. In the PDF that explains the instructions to sign up, it also explains how to join via your email.
